Help yourself fall asleep better and faster with these bedtime stories, which are engaging but not overly stimulating.

Think bedtime stories are just for the little ones? Think again. These days, sleep-deprived grown-ups are flocking to bedtime stories, which are often an essential part of mindfulness and meditation apps. Popularised during the ongoing pandemic, these apps feature breathing exercises, calming stories, and even habit trackers, all designed to help one ease feelings of stress and anxiety.

Those with trouble sleeping can consider turning to bedtime stories, which are specially made for adults. Reminiscent of childhood days where we drifted off to the voices of our caretakers reading us a book, these bedtime stories are meant to be engaging but not overly stimulating. Options are aplenty, including retellings of classical fairy tales, lyrical poems, stories about far-flung travels, and even mundane recitations of instructional manuals that are bound to put you to sleep. Those who find ASMR (Autonomous sensory meridian response) relaxing can also choose stories that are read in a whispering manner.

Take your pick from these apps:

One of the most widely downloaded apps for meditation and sleep, Calm offers bedtime stories that range between 25 to 40 minutes in length. Drift off to dreamland by listening to stories read by a variety of readers, including celebrities like Matthew McConaughey. You’ll find more than 100 stories in the library, including stories about nature, trains, the Earth, and travel. Refreshing nap stories are also available for those who want to doze off fast for a quick shuteye.

Great for literary lovers, this bedtime story app offers more than 100 tales featuring well-loved characters like Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Doolittle, and Robinhood, as well as stories by authors like Emily Bronte and Jane Austin. Stories are as short as 13 minutes or as lengthy as 42 minutes, depending on how long you take to doze off. Setting itself apart from other apps on this list, its bedtime stories include sleep data tracking, as well as the ability to set a timer that turns off the sound or an alarm that wakes you up.

Aside from guided meditations, Headspace’s bedtime stories feature simple fictional tales that complement the narrator’s voice with relaxing ambient sounds like wind and rainfall. Called “Sleepcasts”, each 45-minute-long bedtime story allows users to control the volume of the story’s ambient sound according to their preference. What’s interesting is that some Sleepcasts resemble guided meditations, with the narrator telling you to breathe, relax, and reflect on your day before delving into storytelling.

Better Sleep

Formerly known as Relax Melodies, Better Sleep features a comprehensive music library that allows users to compose their own ambient tunes and soundscapes to promote sleep. Bedtime stories, ranging from 30 to 60 minutes in length, are also available. Perfect for those who tend to take longer to fall asleep, the app comes with playlists featuring multiple stories, or a combination of music recordings and stories. Sci-fi and fantasy stories seem to be their forte, including tales about dragons and pirates.
