Stay happy, warm, and cosy during the rainy season with these helpful tips.

With thundery showers continuing into the first half of March thanks to the northeast monsoon season over Singapore, one can expect cool days and chilly nights. But if the constant downpour and gloomy skies have you feeling down, here are some helpful tips to lift your mood.

Eat warm foods

Rainy days are often linked to the cold season, so don’t forget to stay warm and build up your immunity to prevent sickness. Make healthier food choices and include ingredients rich in Vitamin C to keep flu and infection at bay. Enjoying some piping hot soup or stew can provide symptom relief for flu and increase hydration in your body.

Try home-based workouts

If the grey skies make it hard to enjoy outdoor sports and leave you reluctant to commute to the gym, try home-based workouts instead. All you need is sufficient space to not bump into your surroundings and/or a yoga mat for joint support, to enjoy body-weight exercises, or a HIIT workout. Free fitness videos by instructors are aplenty on YouTube and sites like Alo Moves.

Spruce up your space

Spending more time at home is the perfect excuse for creating a cosy space to relax in, especially when it’s dark and gloomy outside. Arrange some throws and cushions on your favourite sofa for a comfortable nook to read or chill in or light some candles to bring a beautiful glow back into your home.

Limit your screen time

Staying in during the rainy weather can make it tempting for one to stare at the screen all day, whether it’s catching up on work or television. With all that’s going on in the world now, you might be “doomscrolling”—the act of spending an excessive amount of screen time devoted to the absorption of negative news. The best way to curb this behaviour? Go on a digital detox.

Nourish your mind

Indoor activities are great for exercising the mind, whether it’s solving a puzzle or finishing a crossword by yourself. Those who prefer some company can invite family or friends over to play board games or challenge each other with a multi-player video game. By keeping your mind active, you’ll be less prone to feeling depressed on rainy days.
