Give your old shoes a new lease of life by donating them to Sport SG. By SAMANTHA FRANCIS.

Whether you’re a sneakerhead or not, a glance into your shoe cabinet might just reveal countless pairs of old and underutilised kicks. If you’ve got no more use for them, why not donate them for the greater good?

Sport SG has launched a shoe waste collection programme aptly themed “Old Shoe, New Future.” The nationwide effort aims to recycle used sports shoes and turn them into materials that can be used for jogging tracks, fitness corners, playgrounds, and even sporting equipment in Singapore. This is in line with the city-state’s agenda to build a more sustainable future for the next generation.

According to the organisers, accepted donations include all sorts of rubberised shoes, including sports shoes, school shoes, and football boots (without metal studs). Rubberised slippers and sandals that don’t have metal parts can be donated as well. Before bringing them to a collection point, do check that these shoes are dry and generally clean as soiled shoes can cause contamination in the process. Once collected, these shoes will be sent to a grinding facility and turned into granular material for use.

To give your old shoes a new lease of life, donate them at over 80 locations including stadiums, schools, and Decathlon outlets.

Collection points include the following:
