The effervescent working mom shares how she creates an inspiring and productive workspace at home. By SAMANTHA FRANCIS.

The pandemic may have whisked most of us out from our comfort zones, but for Tjin Lee, it’s given her a newfound focus on self-care. The founder and managing director of homegrown PR agency Mercury Marketing & Communications, who’s also the mother of two adorable boys, shares how she set boundaries between work and play while creating an inspiring home workspace primed for productivity.

What’s a day in your life like?

My day often starts at 8 am with a detox juice, followed by some precious time spent with my sons and my first working call. Throughout the day, I unwind by sometimes catching up with friends, tending to my plants after lunch, and working out on a spin bike. Dinner hour remains precious as it’s family time while relaxing before bedtime is a treat.

What’s the most fulfilling part about your job and what’s the most challenging?

I play multiple roles—they each have their own rewards and challenges. The most enjoyable part is being able to find solutions for clients and brands we work with at Mercury PR and Marketing. The most challenging but also the most fulfilling is helping them create innovative ways to navigate and stand out in the increasingly complex social and digital world.

How do you create boundaries between work and play at home? Especially when you’re a mother-of-two.

This has been extremely tough under the current partial lockdowns. I take most of my important meetings in the mornings and I have help from neighbours and family to watch the boys on some afternoons when I need to focus on work. As they say, it takes a village to raise a child.

For self-care, I make sure I stay connected to my close friends. I regularly have a couple of good friends over for meals and afternoon cocktails—these personal time-outs bring a lot of joy and comfort during times like these.

What are some of your work-from-home essentials?

Headphones, coffee, flowers, and scented candles.

Could you share some tips on setting up a comfortable yet stylish office space at home?

I like spaces with a lot of natural diffused sunlight for Zoom calls. Make sure you have a clean and appropriate backdrop or one that isn’t too distracting, as it represents you professionally during work calls.

How do you stay productive while working from home?

I tend to get easily distracted, so it helps to really focus on completing one task at a time.

What does wellness mean to you?

Wellness means being in a good mental and emotional space.

How do you de-stress and unwind at the end of a long workday?

After putting the boys to sleep, I enjoy some time just for myself with music, sometimes good reading, often Netflix, as well as sharing news and conversations with friends.
